Thursday, November 21, 8:30-10:00am

Design Corps of Santa Fe Hosts Free Presentation about Santa Fe Art Institute by SFAI Executive Director Jamie Blosser.

The Design Corps of Santa Fe hosts SFAI Executive Director Jamie Blosser for a presentation at the Library at Santa Fe Art Institute on Thursday, November 21, 8:30-10:00 a.m. At this Corps Coffee — which is free and open to the public — Jamie will talk about SFAI’s 35-year history, mission, and programming that supports artists and creative practitioners as leaders and catalysts for change.

SFAI is an independent nonprofit and one of the few organizations still operating at the Midtown Campus, a 64-acre site that was the College of Santa Fe and then the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, now vacant as the City determines its future. Jamie says, “I look forward to discussing the ways that SFAI is stepping up to help shape the future of the Midtown Site, our vision for how the Santa Fe community can better support local artists and creatives in Midtown, and ways for Design Corps members to become involved.”

The Corps Coffee begins at 8:30 with coffee, pastries, and time to meet other attendees. At 9:00, Jamie will give a 30-minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer and further discussion. Santa Fe Art Institute is located at 1600 St. Michaels Drive in Santa Fe on the Midtown Campus.

At the Santa Fe Art Institute (map)

Thursday, September 19, 8:30-10:00am

The Design Corps of Santa Fe hosts animators Cynthia Beauclair and Ricardo Barros of Little Big Bang Studios for a presentation at the Library at Santa Fe Art Institute on Thursday, September 19, 8:30-10:00 a.m. At this Corps Coffee — which is free and open to the public — the two will discuss how animation has moved beyond its traditional boundaries and can be used in inventive ways to meet the demands of modern communications.

Little Bang’s approach to creative problem-solving, combined with the expanding capabilities of motion graphics, shows the possibilities of seeing a traditional medium with a fresh perspective. “Motion and animation adds to the visual communication of any idea,” Cynthia says. “It helps tell a story, capture and retain the audience’s attention, and provides the opportunity to exceed the boundaries of reality, making abstract thought clear.”

Cynthia Beauclair grew up all over South America and has enjoyed an award-winning, 20-year career in the motion graphics industry, now focusing on client relations. Originally from Brazil, Ricardo Barros worked in the motion graphics industry at such leading networks as CBS, Univision, Discovery Channel, as well as for the Miami Heat. Little Big Bang Studios, specializing in motion graphics and animation, show and network branding, title sequences, corporate presentations, and event displays, was founded in Miami in 2011 and relocated to Santa Fe in 2016.

The Corps Coffee begins at 8:30 with coffee, pastries, and time to meet other attendees. At 9:00, Cynthia and Ricardo will give a 30-minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer and further discussion. July 11 / Corps Coffee ~ Lauren Tresp ~ The Magazine

1415 W Alameda St, Santa Fe, NM 87501

Thursday, July 11, 8:30-10:00am

The Design Corps of Santa Fe hosts publisher and editor Lauren Tresp for a presentation at The Magazine office on Thursday, July 11, 8:30-10:00 a.m. At this Corps Coffee — which is free and open to the public — Lauren will discuss the continued importance of arts criticism during a time when everyman critics proliferate and subjectivity is embraced.

Grounded in a discussion of literary field of criticism and the goals of arts criticism at large, and drilling down into its role in smaller creative communities like Santa Fe, Lauren will share the intention behind some of her work with The Magazine. “Reading criticism is a powerful tool for developing a mind that thinks critically. Seeing the process of critical evaluation take shape through others’ writing, whether we agree or not with their conclusions, can help us to take the time to slow down and really examine and look closely whatever we are being presented with,” she says. “And this kind of critical examination can be applied not only to artworks, exhibitions, films, or performance, but to political conversations, to our own work, and beyond. It’s really a tool for empowerment.”

Lauren Tresp has been writing about and working in contemporary arts for a decade, and has been publisher and editor of The Magazine since 2016. Originally from Wisconsin, she has a background in history and art history, with a particular interest in the visual culture of early Medieval Christian healing cults.

The Corps Coffee begins at 8:30 with coffee, pastries, and time to meet other attendees. At 9:00, Lauren will give a 30-minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer and further discussion. The Magazine office is located at 1415 West Alameda Street.

Held the second Thursday morning of every month, Corps Coffee is an informal event that aims to inspire and foster collaboration by bringing a range of local professionals together. Upcoming Corps Coffees include: SFAI Executive Director Jamie Blosser on August 8; animators Cynthia Beauclair and Ricardo Barros on September 14; and creative mentor Peleg Top on October 10.

April 11 / Corps Coffee ~ Vicki Pozzebon

Thursday, April 11th, 8:30-10:00 am

Santa Fe Art Institute

The Design Corps of Santa Fe hosts Vicki Pozzebon for a presentation about social enterprise. Vicki will discuss what social enterprise means, compare models of social enterprises, and share creative and branding strategies.

Vicki says, “social enterprise is not easy to define. I like to think of it as the very intersection of where business and social change lives. It is the impact that a business owner wants to have — not only on their bottom line — but in their community, or to change a social issue for the better. No matter how big or small your business is or how green or social it is, there are some common themes that likely connect you to people you didn’t expect.”

Vicki Pozzebon is the owner and principal consultant of Prospera Partners, a consulting firm that designs local economy networks, systems, and social enterprise development plans for businesses and organizations that put communities first. Her background includes arts administration, nonprofit development, marketing and public relations, and facilitation. In 2018, Vicki was appointed to the Catalyzing Jobs Committee by City of Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber.

March 14 / Corps Coffee ~ Alec Longstreth

Thursday, March 14th, 8:30-10:00 am

Santa Fe Art Institute

The Design Corps of Santa Fe hosts cartoonist Alec Longstreth at SFAI on March 14 — this event is free and open to the public — Alec will talk about the philosophy that has been at the heart of his creative practice for the last 20 years: “Draw Comics EVERY Day.” This simple concept applies to writing, designing, illustrating, animating, or making progress on any creative endeavor.

Alec says, “Creative people often feel they are not able to start big projects until someday when they will magically have large swathes of uninterrupted time to focus. For most of us, that day is never going to come, so if you want to make a big project, you need to roll up your sleeves, start now, and chip away at it a little bit each day, even if it’s only for 15 or 20 minutes at a time. It all adds up!”

Alec has been self-publishing his Ignatz Award-winning minicomic Phase 7 since 2002, which has been collected into six books, including two French translations. Alec also creates a weekly fantasy webcomic for kids called Isle of Elsi, and works as a freelance illustrator and digital colorist. Alec is the Director of Academic Outreach for Center For Cartoon Studies, a cartooning school in Vermont offering MFAs, certificates, and summer workshops.

The Corps Coffee begins at 8:30 with coffee, pastries, and time to meet other attendees. At 9:00, Alec will give a 30-minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer and further discussion. This informal event aims to inspire and foster collaboration by bringing a range of local professionals and businesses together.

In addition to photographing Santa Fe’s bustling food scene for local media, she has also photographed two cookbooks. Beyond farm to table photography,Gabriella produces vibrant lifestyle and product photography for Santa Fe based businesses.

She’s driven to discover in every single shot an opportunity to frame moments and light in harmonious and striking detail. Perhaps the most single most powerful thing she has learned is how essential good listening – to the client, to the subject, to the environment – is crucial to creating and capturing the right image.

Visit gabriellamarksphotography.com.

About Bill:
I made the decision to embrace the lemming march of still photographers into video/motion during the winter of 2011/12 and it’s been a sprint ever since. I thrive on the steepest part of the learning curve. Shortly after getting some footing on the workings of video production, I learned it was a good fit – multiple layers of systems to manage, exponentially more gears to keep turning, crafting a story with the input of several other collaborators, and on and on. The thing that struck me most, coming from still photography, is how much I enjoy working with a team of creatives focused on the common goal of making the best work possible.

Capabilities run the gamut from one-man-band to full-blown production. I can work with nearly any size budget.

Local collaborators/teammates include producers, directors, DP’s, editors/colorists, motion graphics artists, graphic designers, gaffers/grips, hair/makeup.

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017, 5:30pm—8:30pm
Artisan Minds
505 Cerrillos Rd. Ste 103A, Santa Fe

Corps Cocktails has a new twist! Design Corps Members will now be hosting this event at their studio or a location of their choice.

To kick things off, Member Nicole Rassmuson of Artisan Minds and her partner Suzanne O’Leary, will be hosting this month’s event at their studio at Luna.
Here is a little bit of info about our hosts:
Artisan Minds is a Santa Fe based brand and communication design agency with a passion for creating, rejuvenating and propelling brands. We have over 50 years experience in over 50 countries working with the world’s most prominent agencies and brands. We are selective about our work because we hand-craft every project ourselves. Our branding process defines your organization’s strategic backbone, personality and heart. It sets the stage for your narrative and design, voice and look and feel to drive permanent differentiation. But most importantly, it creates strategic alignment with key stakeholders from the onset. All content and design flows from this platform.

All are welcome! Whether you are someone who is looking to meet creative professionals, someone who is interested in becoming a Design Corps Member, or if you simply want to hang out with some great people, please join us for this monthly event. As usual beer and wine will be served along with some tasty treats!

If you are interested in hosting an upcoming Corps Cocktails, please drop us a note at sayhi@dev.design-corps.org.

March 8th  /  Corps Coffee ~ An Introduction to Litter Nation

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017, 9am—10:30am
Meow Wolf’s Chimera Workshop
1352 Rufina Circle, Santa Fe

After a brief hiatus Design Corps is back with its first Corps Coffee of 2017.

Join us at Meow Wolf on Wednesday, March 8th at 9am for an introduction to litternation.org. The litter mapping, design impact, community challenge.

Introducing Litter Nation — designed as a tool to create and spark change—a means of mapping the extent of litter around Santa Fe, the state, and across the country. What’s the full impact and the extent of the debris that litters our landscape? How can we facilitate cleanups, better recycling programs, and greatly reduce litter?

We’ll introduce the concept of Litter Nation, how to register, and how to effectively use the website.

With your help in collecting thousands of pieces of litter and mapping them, we can then stimulate constructive conversations, promote clean up and recycling in heavily impacted areas, and advocate for progressive policy and program changes based on the results we’re seeing.

We need your debris-collecting, data-driven, geotagging, volunteering selves. We invite you to be a Litter Nation user.

A $20 donation to this project gets you a Litter Nation carrier bag. Whether you are hiking, biking, or just walking around town, this bag leaves you hands-free for photographing and it has the capacity needed for debris-collecting.

November 9th  /  Design is Not Art

For our next Corps Coffee we were inspired by a recent interview with Milton Glaser “Design has nothing to do with art.” Design legend Milton Glaser dispels a universal misunderstanding.” Milton states “Design is the process of going from an existing condition to a preferred one, observe that there’s no relationship to art.” Let’s have the conversation, see you then!

September 14th  /  Tour THE FENCE

Wednesday, September 14th, 9am—11am
The Santa Fe Railyard Park, Community Room
(across the parking lot from Warehouse 21, 1914 Paseo de Peralta)

Join Gabriella Marks, Santa Fe based photographer, Design Corps Member, and President of the New Mexico chapter of ASMP and Linda Shafer, Executive Director of the Railyard Park Conservancy, in a conversation about bringing THE FENCE photography project to the Railyard Park.

We’ll talk about some of the challenges involved and resources available when producing public art projects on this scale, and the potential for public art to promote professional communities.

In July, 2016, ASMP, in partnership with the Railyard Conservancy, the Railyard Park Art Committee and United Photo Industries brought the largest outdoor exhibit of photography in New Mexico to Santa Fe. Featuring 56 photographers in nearly 600 feet of photography, the goal of this unique exhibition is to present exceptional work that is innovative and accessible to all people.

August 15th & 16th  /  The Center for Urban Pedagogy at SFAI

Monday, August 15th, 7pm & Tuesday, August 16th, 9am—4pm
Santa Fe Art Institute, 1600 St. Michaels Drive

The Design Corps of Santa Fe is thrilled to announce our collaboration with the Santa Fe Art Institute and the Santa Fe Dreamers Project, in partnership with the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP). CUP is an award winning non-profit based in New York City that uses collaborative design processes with grassroots organizations and talented designers and artists to create popular education materials on critical social justice issues.
For the launch of SFAI’s Immigration Project Year, SFAI is initiating this collaboration to highlight the power of design and art for the purpose of civic engagement. This is a pilot project for CUP as they look to disseminate their methodologies in other communities outside of New York City — like Santa Fe!

We invite Design Corps’ Members, Ambassadors, and Colleagues to attend this one-time opportunity to learn these methodologies from an organization that knows how to get it done!

We also want to invite you to participate in our collaboration with SFAI, CUP, and the Santa Fe Dreamers Project. If you are interested, please email Renee Innis at sayhi@dev.design-corps.org for more details.

To RSVP for this event, please visit sfai.org.
